Ask a question?

Judging from some of the searches that led people here along with my own experiences, I know I had a lot of questions both going into and starting nursing school. I’ve got questions everyday come to think of it. But with the semester being nearly over, I do have some knowledge that I can pass along. I try to integrate some of those things I learn into my nursing school posts, but I know some things slip through the cracks.
So, if anyone’s got any questions about nursing school, application process, whatever, feel free to ask! I’d love to answer them. And if I can’t, I’ll find the answer from any of my resources or point you in the right direction.

ZOMG, 20!

Happy birthday my love!!
He is 20 now and no longer a teenager. How old!
I was waiting to post this until I had a picture to go with it. We rang in Ishaq’s birthday at midnight on the dot. I hyped him up for it telling him that his birthday gift was going to be the best ever.
It was a video camera- something he’s been wanting forever. It’s really nice. We met in a filmmaking class, so it was kind of sentimental as well. He’s forever got ideas for movies and that is one of his greatest creative outlets. We can’t wait until it’s sunny again so the movie making can begin! His brothers are just as into cinematography as he is, so we’ll see!

We slept in and woke up around 12:30. We had lunch at an Indian food restaurant in Chapel Hill (our favorite one in the Triangle) and went to the planetarium. Unfortuanately, it was closed. They’re forced to close at 3pm now because of the budget cuts. There were two other couples trying to go at the same time we did. So that was disappointing. Well, for me, not for Ishaq. I love my optimistic husband. He was still thrilled about the camera and Indian food. And, he said he was excited just because I remembered he loved astronomy.
So we went to the movie theater (cliche, but the wind and rain had ruined all of my other plans) and decided to see Watchmen. We were an hour early, so we spent the whole time playing video games which was actually really fun. The movie was only okay. But we had a good time regardless.
Afterwards, we went and saw his family before going home and continuing on our Naruto series. That’s an anime show we watch online that is SUPER good. Mmhmm.

The verdict: He says it was his best birthday ever. Seriously. (Even if it was Friday the 13th! -_-)

Wednesday the 11th, I went up to Asheville with my other bestfriend Dash. We were going to see the boy she may start dating soon and his art show he was having. I must say, the boyo is VERY talented. His paintings looked exactly like the photographs they were inspired from.
The drive up was awesome. She’s one of the few people I can stay in close proximity with for long periods of time without getting bothered by. I think it’s cause we’re like the same person. No matter!
The mountain air was quite refreshing. I really love Asheville. We passed by Riverside cemetary which was really beautiful (in a morbid way, I suppose). It was very old-school with large headstones. It was too cold and windy to stay for more than 2 minutes though.
The art show was small but nice. All three artists are incredibly gifted. One had a South African accent which reminded me of Ishaq, of course.
We went back to her friend’s house where we were staying for the night. They were really nice! I also learned how to spin poi. Kind of. This starter set are the balls that light up red and you spin them around on a bungee-type string. The real kind involves fire that you spin. Pishaw, like I’ll ever do that. Unlikely.
I also hit myself in the face and in the back of the head. The consequences of learning poi. But it looks really cool when you get it right.
After her boyo came over, we had a bonfire and made smores. They were amazing! It was like being 5 again (according to Dash).
The trip kind of ended abruptly because we got into our first argument ever. But, I’m sure that was bound to happen at some point since we’re going on 4 years of bestfriendship.

Overall, it was a seriously good trip though!

Out With My Mom

Alright, I’m backtracking because it’s spring break, so the next couple of posts will be about my last week.
I worked yesterday, today, and will be back tomorrow and tuesday. A four-day week- the worst. That means I’ll be putting in 50 hours of work over these four days. But it works out cause I get several days off coming up!

So Tuesday the 10th was a date with my mom!! It was fantastic. I’ve missed being able to do stuff like this with her on a regular basis. But it’s fine.

It started off with her making me believe we were running errands. We tried to get a passport photo for her. It took forever. The dude at the store was rude and didn’t really do anything. No matter!

She took me to get a pedicure at this new nail place right next to my house. It was the best pedicure I’ve ever had. For just $35, we got sea salt scrubs, nail color change, lotion, massage, and a bunch of other stuff. Quality, for sure.
We then went to Shiki Sushi for lunch which was absolutely delicious.
After that, we went back to her house and watched Rachel Getting Married which was a really great movie. I enjoyed it thoroughly. It had a more indie feel which was slighly surprising. I thought itwas more mainstream since it had been nominated for a several awards.

We decided to make this a monthly thing which I am really looking forward to.

So, here’s my to-do list for spring break:
-clean up the house
-get the new dishwasher installed (it comes on Wed!!!! and is very needed!!!)
-hang up artwork
-work on older adult project
-study for elimination test (3 days after i get back to school)
-go visit jan overnight
-read for leisure
-try out some new recipes (baking!)

I’m very excited. I just need to get through this work bit, seriously.

Nasty-Icky-Clinical Smells

Need some ways to avoid those nasty-icky-clinical skills?
Here are some tips and tricks passed down from my CRNA-friend-in-training on how to avoid gagging in the field of nursing!!

1. Vicks under the nose is a classic.
2. Put Vicks on the outside of a face mask and then layer with another face mask.
3. Haven’t got any Vicks? Do the same thing as number 2, but substitute Vicks for toothpaste.
4. Haven’t got Vicks or toothpaste? Do the same thing as number 2, but substitute Vicks for a couple of alcohol sheets.

So there you go!!

Enjoy not gagging yourself into an oblivion!

It’s a shame.

It really is a shame when girls go back to people who beat them. I don’t understand it. I hate it. It angers me.
Even outside of physical beatings, it’s a shame when people go back to people or things that are damaging.
Modern-day example? Rihanna and Chris Brown.
He beats her to the Nth degree and she begs the judge to not prohibit her boyfriend from seeing her or having contact with her. She wants to continue being close to and in a relationship with the boy who beat her.
It wasn’t even a little scuffle they had. It was a full on beat-down.
Here’s the search warrant and affadavit that describes what happens.

Note: Robyn F. is Rihanna’s real name.

“Brown was driving a vehicle with Robyn F. as the front passenger on an unknown street in Los Angeles. Robyn F. picked up Brown’s cellular phone and observed a three-page text message from a woman who Brown had a previous sexual relationship with.

“A verbal argument ensued and Brown pulled the vehicle over on an unknown street, reached over Robyn F. with his right hand, opened the car door and attempted to force her out. Brown was unable to force Robyn F. out of the vehicle because she was wearing a seat belt. When he could not force her to exit, he took his right hand and shoved her head against he passenger window of the vehicle, causing an approximate one-inch raised circular contusion.

“Robyn F. turned to face Brown and he punched her in the left eye with his right hand. He then drove away in the vehicle and continued to punch her in the face with his right hand while steering the vehicle with his left hand. The assault caused Robyn F.’s mouth to fill with blood and blood to splatter all over her clothing and the interior of the vehicle.

“Brown looked at Robyn F. and stated, ‘I’m going to beat the s–t out of you when we get home! You wait and see!’ ”

The detective said “Robyn F.” then used her cell phone to call her personal assistant Jennifer Rosales, who did not answer.

“Robyn F. pretended to talk to her and stated, ‘I’m on my way home. Make sure the police are there when I get there.’

“After Robyn F. faked the call, Brown looked at her and stated, ‘You just did the stupidest thing ever! Now I’m really going to kill you!’

“Brown resumed punching Robyn F. and she interlocked her fingers behind her head and brought her elbows forward to protect her face. She then bent over at the waist, placing her elbows and face near her lap in [an] attempt to protect her face and head from the barrage of punches being levied upon her by Brown.

“Brown continued to punch Robyn F. on her left arm and hand, causing her to suffer a contusion on her left triceps (sic) that was approximately two inches in diameter and numerous contusions on her left hand.

“Robyn F. then attempted to send a text message to her other personal assistant, Melissa Ford. Brown snatched the cellular telephone out of her hand and threw it out of the window onto an unknown street.

“Brown continued driving and Robyn F. observed his cellular telephone sitting in his lap. She picked up the cellular telephone with her left hand and before she could make a call he placed her in a head lock with his right hand and continued to drive the vehicle with his left hand.

“Brown pulled Robyn F. close to him and bit her on her left ear. She was able to feel the vehicle swerving from right to left as Brown sped away. He stopped the vehicle in front of 333 North June Street and Robyn F. turned off the car, removed the key from the ignition and sat on it.

“Brown did not know what she did with the key and began punching her in the face and arms. He then placed her in a head lock positioning the front of her throat between his bicep and forearm. Brown began applying pressure to Robyn F.’s left and right carotid arteries, causing her to be unable to breathe and she began to lose consciousness.

“She reached up with her left hand and began attempting to gouge his eyes in an attempt to free herself. Brown bit her left ring and middle fingers and then released her. While Brown continued to punch her, she turned around and placed her back against the passenger door. She brought her knees to her chest, placed her feet against Brown’s body and began pushing him away. Brown continued to punch her on the legs and feet, causing several contusions.

“Robyn F. began screaming for help and Brown exited the vehicle and walked away. A resident in the neighborhood heard Robyn F.’s plea for help and called 911, causing a police response. An investigation was conducted and Robyn F. was issued a Domestic Violence Emergency Protective Order.”
It’s okay though. He apologized via text message over a week later.
So it’s alright for them to date again.

Ishaq brought up a point. This stuff happens everyday and girls everywhere continue to go back.

This is ridiculous. Seriously.

on the way home at a stoplight.

Work was good in the PICU today. This family that I got extremely close to was finally able to go home after being in the hospital for several months. I am SO happy for them!
I need to remember to send them an email tomorrow.

Ishaq is finished with his application for nursing school and is gonna turn it in on Monday. I’m so proud of him!

Dash is home and I’m going to go up with her to Asheville for the night on Wednesday. I’m real excited!

I’ve also got lab on Monday to make up for the snow day even though it’s Spring Break. But it’s okay- I need to learn how to put catheters in properly anyways.

Alright, we’re heading upstairs to get further along in Naruto- the anime series we’re watching. It’s amazing. He tried to give me shit for it cause he doesn’t like anime. But he’s totally sucked in now. So ha.

Back to work in the morning. Night!
